A New Community Garden for Dinas Powys
Community Foodie is working alongside the Dinas Residents group to create a community growing project. In the time that Foodie has been working with the group there has been great progress made to transform a derelict and overgrown recreation area into a fully-fledged community growing project.
Foodie support has included:
- Identify growing style and site plan
- Engage with wider community
- Gain relevant permissions and agreements with council
- Financially supported the project
- Levered in extra funding for the project
- Working with landscapers and contractors
- Formation of a steering group
- Public events
Now all these aspects are in place and the landscaping work complete the vision is now a reality. The site has been transformed into a community growing area, providing mixed plots for all skill levels and abilities, raised beds for disabled or restricted mobility and community gathering area for sharing produce, hosting workshops and events.
What was once a disused, derelict area that the residents of Dinas Powys avoided has now become a veggie growing oasis.
And the good work does not stop there! The Gardens steering group made up of local residents meets regularly to support the project and they also hold regular volunteer days (normally on a Sunday) to carry out works on the site. If you want to see community spirit in action come down to Nightingale Community Garden.
